Witnesses appeal: Man has jaw broken in Northern Quarter

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man had his jaw broken after being attacked by a group of man in Manchester city centre.

Shortly before 2:15am on Sunday 7 February 2016, police were called to Hilton Street in the Northern Quarter area of the city centre to reports that a man had been assaulted by a group of men.

Officers attended and found a 25-year-old man with serious facial and hand injuries before he was taken to hospital where he needed surgery on a broken jaw. He remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Further enquiries established that the victim was in the process of leaving The Pen and Pencil bar when he was set upon by a group of four or five men who began punching and kicking him.

It is not currently known if there had been some sort of prior altercation between the men and the group and police are now appealing for witnesses to the assault to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Phil Marsh of GMP’s City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “This young man has been subject to a brutal assault by a group of men which has left him with some very serious injuries.

“It is not quite clear if there had been some sort of previous altercation between the group and the man and we are keen to speak to anyone who may know something.

“The Northern Quarter can be one of the busiest areas of the city centre on a weekend so we believe that there will have been quite a lot of people around who may have witnessed the attack.

“If anybody has any information that they believe can assist with our enquiries then please contact police.”

Anybody with information should contact police on 0161 856 3221 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
