Firefighters are urging people to get rid of their chip pans after an 82-year-old woman suffered smoke inhalation following a chip pan fire.
A crew from Farnworth and Horwich Fire Stations were called to the blaze on Barnside Avenue, Worsley, at 11.20am this morning, February 24.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel to tackle the blaze, which was brought under control after an hour.
Watch Manager Paul Harrison, who was in charge of the incident, said: “The lady was alerted by her smoke alarm and made her way outside where a neighbour called 999.
“Our Trauma Technician treated he 82 year old lady, for minor smoke inhalation until paramedics arrived
“Chip pans are incredibly dangerous, we would advise all residents to refrain from using them and to switch to alternatives like deep fat fryers or oven chips.
“Try to discourage friends and family, particularly those who are elderly or vulnerable from using them in the future.
“Please take care and try not to leave cookers or other kitchen appliances unattended when in use.
“Incidents like this show us why it’s important for smoke alarms to be tested regularly.
