Electricity North West is supporting the careers of ten budding engineer technicians to help keep the lights on across the North West.
The region’s power operator is looking for two apprentices in Salford to embark on the three-year scheme, which will give them an insight into what it’s like to be an engineering technician and see them train to work on the local electricity network.
The apprenticeship scheme is aimed at people looking to develop a career in the electricity industry and they will help Electricity North West power the region for years to come.
Training will be based in a multi-million pound training academy in Blackburn, combined with on the job training and days at college. Successful completion of the higher level engineering apprenticeship will lead to jobs as technicians, design engineers based in Salford.
Launching the 2016 scheme, Sally McGuire, head of talent and resourcing for Electricity North West, said: “We’re proud to offer local people the opportunity to embark on high quality training, receive hands-on experience and enjoy a long and successful career.
“It’s an exciting time to work in the industry and so many people and businesses rely on our electricity network, it’s incredibly important that it is properly maintained by skilled professionals in the future.”
After graduating from the scheme last year Claire Skellon, aged 32, based in Salford, said: “I decided to apply for the scheme in order to progress and further my career within the business and saw the scheme as a fantastic opportunity for me to do that.
“The highlight for me would be achieving a distinction in my HNC and achieving my full competency authorisation so I can do operational work without supervision.”
Iain Lindley, councillor for Walkden South, said: “I’m delighted that Electricity North West is providing these excellent opportunities right here in Walkden and Salford. I know that there are many talented local people who have the ability to succeed in these roles and I would encourage them to apply.”
