Students from Salford City College have shown their dedication to the local community, by taking part in a series of litter picking activities last week.
On Monday the College’s Volunteer Task Force, which is made up of students from Pendleton Sixth Form Centre and senior staff from the college, clubbed together for the ‘Big Clean Up’.
The Volunteer Task Force was launched at the end of last year, and a rota was drawn up for students and staff to take turns to complete a number of community projects.
As part of the monthly ‘Big Clean Up’ the team of dedicated volunteers spent Monday afternoon collecting rubbish around Irlam o’the Height as part of a major plan to improve the image of the area.
First year BTEC Business student Tatiana Resende joined the Volunteer Task Force when it was first established in November.
The 17-year-old said: “I moved to Salford last year from France, and I found that being part of the Task Force was a great way to meet people, and show my dedication to my new community.”
Meanwhile, a group of students and staff from the Skills for Working Life department at Eccles Sixth Form Centre took part in the ‘Clean for the Queen Day’ on Saturday morning. The nationwide campaign encouraged people across the country to tidy up for Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday, and the Salford students headed to Parr Fold Park in Walkden to do their bit for the local community.
Eccles Sixth Form Centre student James Hughes, 21, explained: “I decided to take part because Parr Fold Park is where I ride my bike and sometimes hang out with my friends, and this gave me something new to do. I enjoyed taking part as a group- the Skills for Working Life department are all friends and like to help each other out.”
“The work done by our students this week as part of the Volunteer Task Force and the ‘Clean for the Queen Day’ is a shining example of the dedication these young people show towards their local community,” commented Saf Arfan, Vice Principal for Development and Innovation at Salford City College. “It makes me immensely proud to see our students taking the time to engage with the local community to make a positive difference for the people that live there.”
