Watch: MasterChef star Tony Rodd cooks up a storm at Salford Fairtrade breakfast

BBC MasterChef 2015 runner-up Tony Rodd helped students celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight this morning with a Fairtrade breakfast at MediaCityUK.

The University of Salford hosted the breakfast which used Fairtrade produce to shine a light on the challenges faced by millions of farmers and workers who produce the food we eat.

This year’s theme for the Fairtrade campaign is ‘Sit down for breakfast, stand up for farmers!’.

This event is one of many being held across the country from 29 February until 13 March.

The Fairtrade Fortnight campaign is a bid to get shoppers to swap their usual brands to Fairtrade.

Tony Rodd told SalfordOnline.com the importance of buying Fairtrade produce: “I think it is important for us when we source any ingredients to think where the food is coming from and how the farmer is treated and try and make sure that we are looking after future generations.

“It’s a really easy thing for us to support, you just look for the logo when you are in the supermarket but it does such a wealth of difference to the farmers lives in other countries.”

Fairtrade products were used to create this morning’s continental breakfast which was made by Salfood Catering, Fairtrade products are also sold on campus at Salford.

On behalf of the Fairtrade Group at the University of Salford, Laura Bayliss said, “Farming is the backbone of the world. It’s simply wrong that so many farmers who work hard to produce what we eat go hungry themselves.”

The Fairtrade Foundation uses a mark on all its products to inform consumers that the product meets international Fairtrade standards. This label appears on products to show that disadvantaged producers are getting a better deal from trade.

Fairtrade currently works alongside 1.5 million farmers and workers in developing countries enabling them to earn a sustainable income.
