Beechfield United Saturday Morning Senior Team edged six points clear at the top of the First Division with a 4-3 away win over Aldwyn Town.
But on a small and heavy pitch Beechy were forced to do it the hard way when they found themselves 2-0 down after only nine minutes.
Gradually United looked a greater threat going forward and keeping the pressure on their opponents reduced the arrears in the 24th minute.
A clearance by Beechy keeper Declan Oliver sailed deep into the Aldwyn Town half and the flight of the ball was misjudged by a home team defender who headed into his own net.
10 minutes later Max Leonard scored his 29th goal of the season netted United’s fully deserved equaliser and it remained 2-2 when the referee blew for half time.
Once the second half was underway Beechy were able to step up a gear and playing some top-class soccer eventually went 3-2 up on seventy minutes when Wes Pierce was involved in a neat move with Mohsin Miah who produced a stylish finish.
United’s fourth goal arrived after 82 minutes thanks to a slick one-two between Roy Owen and Wes Pierce and the latter easily fired the ball past the keeper.
Aldwyn Town’s third goal scored in the eighty seventh minute meant Beechy were forced to survive a nervous ending to the match.
Scott Foulds was voted United’s Man of the Match. In the semi-final of the Manchester Evening News Cup United play Hazel Grove FC on Saturday 2 April 2016.
