Pictured: Man falls asleep on bus, steals bus, crashes bus, say police

Police have released a CCTV image after a bus was stolen in Stalybridge.

On Saturday 5 December 2015 a man had fallen asleep on a bus and when it returned to the bus depot on Clarence Street he got off the bus, but managed to get onto another empty bus and drove it away.

He drove away in the direction of Droylsden and turned onto Clegg Street, where he collided with a building. The man then jumped off the bus and fled on foot.

Police have released a CCTV image of a man they are keen to speak to in connection with the theft.

Police Sergeant Ade Girtchen of Tameside division said: “Stealing a bus is a dangerous and foolish thing to do. Thankfully no-one was hurt when the bus crashed, but people could have been seriously injured.

“We have a clear CCTV image of a man we want to speak to and I am hoping that someone will recognise him and contact police.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 9350, 101, or the independent charity, Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
