A pair of formerly homeless people from local charity Emmaus Salford have used their skills to transform the home of a vulnerable Salford resident.
Emmaus Salford was approached by Salix Homes for help decorating the home of Broughton resident Rita Heaton. Rita, who suffers from Osteoporosis and had broken her leg, recently moved into a new home but was unable to undertake the much needed decorating work herself.
A two man team of companions – formerly homeless people who live and work at Emmaus Salford – agreed to volunteer their services to help transform Rita’s home. Over a two week period the pair stripped walls, sanded woodwork and painted most of the rooms within the property.
Commenting on the work, Rita said: “It’s a weight lifted off me. The work has been brilliant and the lads from Emmaus Salford have treated it like it was their own home. I’m really happy with the finished results.”
Emmaus Salford supports formerly homeless people by offering a home, meaningful work in a social enterprise and an opportunity to get back on their feet again. The concept of solidarity, helping others less fortunate than yourself, is also the central ethos of Emmaus and a motivation for assisting Rita with the decorating work.
Simon Locke, Community Leader at Emmaus Salford, said: “This is a great partnership project that has had a really positive impact for a local resident and for the people who undertook the work. Our companions have utilised their skills, gained work experience, built their confidence and brought a smile to Rita’s face.”
Rebecca Holden, supported tenancy officer at Salix Homes, which manages Salford’s Supported Tenancies Service, said: “The Supported Tenancies Service is here to help people like Rita get back on their feet and into suitable accommodation, but unfortunately Rita’s health meant that she wouldn’t be able to decorate the property herself and employing a private company just wasn’t affordable on her limited income.
“We were delighted when Emmaus agreed to lend a hand and come to Rita’s rescue. They have done a fantastic job, helping to transform Rita’s flat into a real home that she can be proud of and look forward to enjoying her future in.”
