Greater Manchester Police has pledged to recruit almost double the amount of apprentices that it takes on over the next twelve months.
Having already employed 130 apprentices between 2013 and 2015, the Force is now aiming to recruit 240 young people when it starts its next phase in October.
In the last year alone GMP has taken on 60 apprentices in roles such as business administration and operational support.
The announcement comes during this year’s National Apprenticeship Week, a week that celebrates apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.
GMP launched its scheme in 2013, providing employment opportunities for the young people of Greater Manchester and helping them on the ladder to success. The vast majority of GMP apprentices have gone on to full time, permanent roles with in the Force.
Deputy Chief Constable Ian Pilling said: “We have already seen an encouraging number of apprentices recruited and I am absolutely delighted that plans to significantly increase the number of apprentices are underway – after the initial increase in October 2016 we want to see similar recruitment levels in subsequent years.
“Our apprenticeship scheme enables us to provide solid employment opportunities for the young people of Greater Manchester and we are committed to helping more people on the ladder to success.”
Greater Manchester Mayor and Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd said: “There are already more than 100 apprentices working in Greater Manchester Police – each embracing a unique opportunity to work in local policing and build a career in public services, contributing to building safer communities. That’s why I have committed to more investment in GMP’s scheme, creating more apprenticeships this year and providing more opportunities for those seeking work across Greater Manchester. This is great news for our communities and for our next generation.
“It’s fitting that this announcement is during National Apprenticeship Week, when we celebrate the valuable role apprentices play , not just in GMP, but in businesses and organisations across Greater Manchester – contributing to stronger communities and a vibrant economy.”
