Salford explosion ‘rattled windows and shook houses’

A large explosion heard across Ordsall and central Salford this morning is thought to be down to a gas canister exploding in a scrapyard.

European Metals Recycling earlier denied that there had been an explosion but have since confirmed the news.

The bang was heard at around 11am.

On Twitter, one reader says her office windows shook with the force of the blast, while another describes coming out of Sainsbury’s supermarket on Regent Road and seeing the floor shake.

Greater Manchester Fire said they had no record of being called to an emergency incident in Salford this morning.

Claire Gregg, who lives in Ordsall, said on the SalfordOnline Facebook group: “It shook the living room and several neighbours came out on to the street to see what had happened.”

Laura Kendall, also from Ordsall, said: “It was a really loud boom, it sounded just like an explosion.”

A manager at Cemex Salford asphalt plant on Hope Street in Salford, where the blast was rumoured to have occurred, said: “Happily, it’s nothing to do with us, we’ve not had an incident like that here today.

“From what drivers are saying we think it’s at European Metals Recycling down the road on Liverpool Street.”

Reports on social media also indicate the location of the explosion is European Metals Recycling (EMR) scrapyard, near Salford fire station.

An office worker at EMR told SalfordOnline.com this morning they had not heard a loud explosion this morning, and that a manager was not immediately available for comment.

Greater Manchester Police said they were aware of reports of the loud bang in Salford but that there were no reports of any injuries.

They confirmed the location as European Metals Recycling.
