An historic photo of a local football team is missing just one name: is it you?
Beechfield United Football Club – whose reports regularly grace the sports pages of SalfordOnline.com – are looking for one man in particular.
He’s got wavy brown hair and he stands about a foot shorter than the goalkeeper John Butler.
He’s the last piece of the puzzle for club officials who have had this image in their archives for the past 35 years but have never been able to complete the photograph with all the players’ names.
Back Row (L-R): Darren Sykes, Andrew Winnard, Edward Sharples, John Butler, Stephen Cork *(unidentified player)* Kenneth Lingard
Front Row (L-R): Craig Cumbo, Stuart Cusick, Stephen Battersby, Kenneth Whittle, Martin Bainbridge, Karl Colehouse.
Beechfield United was officially founded in 1980 by two local lads: Colin Roden and Barry Salisbury.
But a few years earlier a group of boys on the Folly Lane estate formed a team, started playing, and called themselves Beechfield FC.
They included Edward Sharples, who now wants to get his grandson involved in the club to continue the family’s association.
“We don’t actually know the age group on this photo, but I’ve been able to name all of the players except one,” he said.
“We at the club are hoping SalfordOnline.com’s keen-eyed readers can help us out with this query and make sure our archives are complete and up to date.”
If anyone knows who this unknown player is, please contact Beechfield United club secretary Keith Long on 07929 097513 or email keith.long@beechy.net.
