Youth hurt in hit and run near Salford Royal hospital

A young man was hit by a car which failed to stop near Salford Royal hospital today.

A passing private ambulance witnessed the incident and managed to attend to the lad, who is understood to be 18 years old.

He was knocked to the ground and suffered injuries to his hand and foot.

Police were called to the A576 Eccles Old Road, opposite the Costcutter shop at the corner of Devon Close, at 2.35pm on Wednesday 6 April.

They found the injured victim had been in collision with a silver estate car, which eyewitnesses say sped away up the hill towards Buile Hill Park.

The scene of the accident is some 500 yards from the entrance to Salford Royal hospital.

One eyewitness said: “There were a load of young lads gathered around him. He looked pretty worse for wear.”

The boy was conscious and breathing at the scene and luckily his injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

The accident caused major tailbacks for traffic in and around Salford Royal hospital.

Police have since re-opened Eccles Old Road to general traffic but there are still some knock-on delays.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police confirmed they were looking for a silver estate car seen in or around the area.

Anyone with any information is urged to call Greater Manchester Police on 101.
