Eccles students hoping to raise £1k for St Ann’s Hospice

Students from Salford City College are revising hard for a big examination – running 10 kilometres in the Great Manchester Run on Sunday, May 22.

The teenagers from Eccles Sixth Form Centre are hoping to raise £1,000 for St Ann’s Hospice when they line up with up to 40,000 other runners.

The 11 students and Steve Settle, the College’s Curriculum Manager for Sport and Business, have been going through their paces in preparation for the big day.

The group are studying a Sports Fitness and Development course and Jake Hardy is a cross-country runner so is looking for a fast time. Emma Farrington’s mum Karen makes cards for the hospice so is aware of the work the charity carries out within the community.

Steve said: “St Ann’s is the nominated charity for our college and it’s important that young people to stay active so this is an excellent way of showing our support.

“We didn’t have any problem finding volunteers to take part. There is some friendly rivalry over our finishing times but all that matters is we raise money for such a great cause.”

Students taking part are Will Goslin, Amy Stanley, Emma Farrington, Nikita Stirrup, Leon Horrocks, Jake Hardy, John Main, Chris Greenall, Jake Lydiate and Scott Carpenter.

They are among 248 runners fundraising for St Ann’s in the Run. The hospice raised £44,000 from the event last year, a total it is hoping to beat this time.
