Supporting our heroes in Salford

Salford is set to pay tribute to heroes as part of Armed Forces Week 2016.

Armed Forces Week takes place from Monday 20 to Sunday 26 June and is a celebration for people to offer their appreciation and support for men and women who make up the Armed Forces community – from currently serving troops to service families, veterans and cadets who have served their country.

Tributes start at 10.30am on Monday 20 June when the Ceremonial Mayor of Salford, Councillor Karen Garrido, will lead a short ceremony on the town hall steps to mark the start of the week. A reservist will then raise the armed forces flag which will fly above Salford Civic Centre until Monday 27 June.

On Saturday 25 June Salford’s second annual armed forces parade will leave Duke’s Drive in Monton at 10.30am and finish at Winton Festival. The festival runs from 10am to 4pm for a day of military songs and displays, live music and funfairs. Armed forces servicemen and women will receive their veterans’ badges at 11.30am.

And to finish off the celebrations, a summer fair to salute the forces will be held at Broughton House on Sunday 26 June between 2pm and 4pm.

Kevin Heakin, Deputy Lieutenant for Greater Manchester, will be present at all events.

Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said: “This week is a time to reflect and remember our armed service heroes who give so much for this country.

“The whole armed forces community make so many sacrifices in their lives so we can live peacefully and we want to show our unwavering support.”
