Anyone who was on the same train is now being urged to make contact to help with the investigation.
It happened on the 3.21pm service from Blackpool to Manchester Victoria on Sunday 5 June.
The 18-year-old boarded at Blackpool North and sat down, but when the train arrived at Bolton at 4.29pm a man got on the train and sat down next to her.
Just minutes later the man sexually assaulted her as the train was pulling in to Salford Crescent.
Any witnesses are now being urged to come forward.
Investigating officer PC Marcus Haigh said: “This was a terrifying experience for the young woman who has been left shaken and traumatised by what happened.
“We need to hear from anyone who was on the same service and may have witnessed what happened.
