Serving military get free travel on Metrolink, forever

A new deal struck between tram bosses and the armed forces means servicemen and women will get free travel on the Metrolink indefinitely.

The covenant is in recognition for their military contribution to the nation.

From 25 June any serving personnel or reservist in uniform will get free travel by showing their service ID card.

Since 2006 Metrolink have offered servicepeople free travel on Armed Forces Day.

But a new covenant means this deal is extended to 365 days a year.

On Armed Forces Day this Saturday 25 June, armed forces veterans will also be able to travel for free, for one day only.

It’s now hoped bus and train companies may come forward and sign the covenant to provide region-wide free travel for serving members of the military.

Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee, said: “There are a number of poignant military anniversaries this year, all of which underline the debt the nation has to our Armed Forces, so it was right that Metrolink should join other transport bodies in offering this small token of our appreciation.”

TfGM Chief Executive, Dr Jon Lamonte, a former Air Vice-Marshal in the Royal Air Force, said: “We are always proud to support our Armed Forces and I’m personally delighted that we are able to show this by putting our name to a national agreement which commits us to showing that in a comprehensive way.

“This covenant pledges us to a range of actions we will take to demonstrate how we will be a Forces-friendly organisation. I hope our example will be followed by other transport providers too.”

Armed Forces Day events are taking place in Salford this Saturday at Winton Festival.

An Armed Forces Parade will travel along Parrin Lane from 10.30am, going via Worsley Road and Dover Street, finishing in Winton Park.
