Saturday: Parade in Monton and Winton for Salford Armed Forces Day

Winton Festival is set to celebrate our Armed Forces this weekend with a parade, speeches and live entertainment.

The Armed Forces Parade, which begins this Saturday 25 June at 10.30am, will start at Duke’s Drive in Monton, travelling along Parrin Lane to Worsley Road, to arrive at Winton Park at approximately 10.50am.

The Winton Festival – which runs straight afterwards until 4pm – is free to attend and will include lots of family friendly activities such as face painting, the Greater Manchester Police horses, a climbing wall and live music from vocalist Amy Faulkener.

Tea, coffee and homemade cake will also be served by the Salford Women’s Institute who will be dressed as Land Girls.

Councillor Samantha Bellamy, who organised the event, said: “We want to showcase that this is what Salford is all about, showing pride in our Armed Forces and showing pride in our community.

“When I worked in catering in an Armed Forces hospital, the servicemen and women always said to me that it meant so much to have the support from home.

“It’s what they are fighting for, and they deserve to be celebrated.”

There will be speeches to open the event by Councillor Margaret Morris, Salford and Eccles MP Rebecca Long-Bailey, and Worsley and Eccles South MP Barbara Keeley.

Armed forces servicemen and women will receive their veteran badges at 11.30am alongside The Deans Primary School, from Swinton, who will be singing a medley of songs.

Last year’s Winton Festival was a huge success with hundreds of people lining the streets, waving flags and supporting their troops.

Cllr Bellamy added: “The feedback was amazing from last year, I have never seen it so busy!

“It’s great to see people showcasing their support within the community and I think everyone should come down and enjoy the day.

“Lots of hard work and dedication has gone into it and it’s been a long time coming. I am really looking forward to it.”

To finish off the weekend’s celebrations, a summer fair to salute the forces will be held at Broughton House on Sunday 26 June between 2pm and 4pm.
