Fire crews worked to free a trapped driver near MediaCityUK when a car rolled onto its roof and smashed into a set of traffic lights.

At around 10.10pm on Wednesday 24 June, the car flipped over at speed on Pacific Way in Salford, trapping the two people inside.

One brave passerby stopped at the roadside and helped to pull the female passenger clear of the wreckage before police arrived, but the male driver remained stuck.

“We got there about five minutes after it happened,” said the passerby’s partner.

“I had my daughter in the car with me and we were driving towards it.

“I’m so grateful my partner came out of work late as it would have most certainly would have hit us.

“Both of them are lucky to be alive, the car was completely crushed.”

Fire crews needed around 30 minutes with a hydraulic saw to cut the man free before paramedics took over.

The driver’s injuries are not believed at this stage to be life threatening.

He and his passenger were taken to Wythenshawe Hospital for treatment.

Police closed Pacific Way near Columbus Way because of fears over electrical wiring hanging from the broken traffic lights.

A police source confirmed no other cars were involved in the accident.

Firefighters remained alongside police at the scene in order to make the area safe.
