M60 J12-J10 to close this weekend

By Tom Rodgers

Highways England will shut Junction 12 of the M60 motorway at Eccles this weekend to demolish a 35-tonne metal gantry as part of their smart motorway scheme.

A two-mile stretch of the anticlockwise motorway between Junction 12 at Eccles for the M602 and M62, and Junction 10 at Trafford Park, will be closed for around ten hours overnight for the work to take place.

A 200-tonne crane will pull down the 18-metre structure so new variable speed limit electronic signs can be installed.

The route will be closed from 10pm on Saturday 27 June to 8am on Sunday 28 June.

Diversions will be in place.

Highways England’s Project Manager Paul Hampson said: “Work to demolish 16 overhead gantries began in April and will continue into the summer. All of the closures will take place overnight at weekends at a time when the motorway is at its quietest.”

The demolition is part of a £202 million project between junction 8 of the M60 near Sale and junction 20 of the M62 near Rochdale which will see the latest technology being used to monitor traffic levels and keep vehicles moving.

When the smart motorway scheme is completed in autumn 2017, around 200 new electronic message signs will warn drivers of changes in the mandatory speed limit, lane closures and incidents ahead.
