GMP appeal after a man was assaulted in the city centre

Sometime between 12am and 3.40am on Sunday 19 June, a man was walking along Market Street near to Marks and Spencer when he was approached from behind by another man who started pulling at his rucksack.

The man pushed him away and continued walking before he was approached by a further two males and a female who verbally abused and threatened him.

The victim continued to walk but was knocked onto the floor before two of the group assaulted him, leaving him with facial injuries but nothing was stolen.

Two passers-by were able to intervene and help the man get away from the offenders before they left the scene.

The female is described as white, in her mid-twenties with dark hair.

The man is described as in his early twenties and wearing a cream coloured hoodie.

Detective Constable Sarah Bell, of GMP’s City of Manchester team, said: “This was an unprovoked attack on a man trying to get safely home.

“Thankfully two passers-by were able to disturb them before more serious injuries were inflicted or any property stolen.

“Anyone who may have been in the area at the time and can help us with our investigation should contact the police.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
