Salford celebrates Armed Forces Day

Salford is set to pay tribute with the rest of the country for Armed Forces Day.

Armed Forces Day, held on Saturday 27 June, is part of a celebration for people to offer their appreciation and show their support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to service families, veterans and cadets who have served their country.

The day will start with an armed forces parade from 10.30am and will travel along Parrin Lane, via Worsley Road and Dover Street before finishing in Winton Park.

Councillors Margaret Morris and Barry Warner, Salford’s Armed Forces Champions said: “Armed Forces Day is a special day and our opportunity to salute our heroes past and present. We are delighted that this year our reserves, cadets, community organisations, school children and local residents are taking part in the parade.

“Our Armed Forces and their families are remarkable people and we want to show our unwavering support.”

The parade will finish at 11am in Winton Park where the Winton Festival will take place. Taking place between 11am and 4pm, the festival will be full of activities and entertainment for the whole community.

Future mountaineers can try and scale the climbing wall while the less adventurous can have their faces painted while their parents enjoy tea, coffee and cake served by the Salford Women’s Institute.

Councillor Lancaster continued: “It promises to be a great day out for the family with something for everyone. So come along and have fun.”

The day will also see the opening of Port Salford Greenway, a traffic-free cycling and pedestrian route connecting Winton, Peel Green and Brookhouse. The green route features artwork created by local community groups.
