Excitement as Barton Athletic Club move to new £750k premises


Barton Athletic Club are pleased to announce they have moved into their new £500,000 lottery funded home.

The club, which is based in the City of Salford, received £500,000 National Lottery Funding from Sports England’s Improvement Fund towards a £750,000 Project.

Today saw members of the club help officiate their move by bringing their sign along to the newly built multi-sports facility on Franklin Street, in the Barton Ward of the City of Salford.

The facility will provide the following sports – wrestling, boxing, weightlifting, road running as well as facilitating multi-sport and general fitness sessions.

John Lightfoot, Treasurer of the club, said: “We are really looking forward to settling in. It’s very exciting.

“We are planning to make this a boys and girls club of the future and encourage more people to get involved with keeping fit.”

After 12 years, Barton AC have seen their vision of a permanent multi-purpose sports facility become possible with the help of Sport England, City of Salford, Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Manchester, Greater Sport, the four Governing Bodies of Sport – England Boxing, British Wrestling, British Weightlifting, England Athletics, Eccles and Irlam Neighbourhood Management Team, Salford Sports Network and Salford CVS.

This follows the “Save the Barton AC Campaign” a petition signed by 7,000 people which was launched after they lost their home of 30 years – Eccles Drill Hall.

The club aim to gradually widen their range of sports currently on offer to inclde concept rowing, cycling and many more.

The new facility will be open from Monday to Friday 5pm to 7pm, and on Sunday mornings 10am to 12pm.
