Fears of a large blaze in Salford signalled by heavy plumes of smoke turned out to be a small fire in the garden of a house near Albert Park in Broughton.
Fire crews from Salford and Agecroft were dispatched to Portsmouth Close in Lower Broughton at 1.25pm today to reports of large amounts of smoke coming from the garden of a house.
Readers reported being able to see smoke from the top of Frederick Road in Pendleton, anywhere from half a mile to a mile away.
The flames did spread to a nearby wooden fence, but no-one was injured and the only damage was to grass, fence panels and a small tree around 20ft high.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire said crews were on scene for 35 minutes making sure the scene was safe.
The log was closed shortly before 2pm.
