Old and young to celebrate Youth Day in Salford

One of Salford’s oldest youth centres will be celebrating over 50 years ‘in business’ birthday as part of Youth Day this year.

The Bridgewater Centre in Bridgewater Street, Little Hulton, was one of the first council run centres to open in Salford in the 1960’s.

Young people, who mark Youth Day by organising a wide range of events for young people and local communities with support from Salford City Council, will throw the centre a ‘birthday party’ on Friday August 12.

And across the city they will be turning out to raise funds for a dementia friendly garden, a charity which helps homeless people and people in need, support the revamping of a local park and enjoying everything from cookery to sports.

Councillor Lisa Stone, lead member for children’s and young people’s services, said: “Every year our young people put on a great programme of events on and around Youth Day. They show young people what’s on offer at youth centres which is great for making new friends, building confidence, learning new skills and trying out a wide range of activities they might otherwise never experience.

“But it’s also very much about recognising and valuing the huge contribution young people make to our city. We see young carers providing dedicated support to their families, young people looking out for others and supporting them, putting in hours and hours of training to be champions in various fields, fundraising for charities, campaigning on issues that matter to them and volunteering in their communities.

“They put so much into Salford so Youth Day is all about saying well done, thank you and keep on going!”

Young people will also be trying to trend on Twitter with photos and comments from the day using the hashtag #SalfordYouthDay.
