Update: Patient rescued from roof of Meadowbrook mental health unit

Fire crews successfully rescued a Meadowbrook patient from the roof of the Salford mental health unit after a stand-off that lasted nearly eight hours.

The man, who is being treated at the Stott Lane inpatient facility, climbed on to the top of the building at around 1pm today, Monday 1 August.

Firefighters scrambled their 32-metre aerial platform to the scene, next to Salford Royal hospital.

Speciaist negotiators joined fire crews and staff on scene when the patient could not be persuaded to make his way down from the roof.

After resisting calls to leave throughout the day the man was eventually helped onto the hydraulic platform and brought to the ground.

As of 8.30pm on Monday he had been taken back inside the Meadowbrook facility.

He is understood not to have been injured in any way.

Police initially blocked off the entrance to Meadowbrook when the man was spotted on the roof, later closing Stott Lane to traffic around the inpatient facility.

This cordon has been lifted and the road is due to re-open shortly.

Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMW) run the 68-bed facilty.

In an earlier statement the director of nursing and operations at GMW, Gill Green, said that management and staff were doing everything possible to ensure the man’s safety.
