Following a two week lay-off Beechfield United Ladies were back in action in the Manchester FA Women’s Summer League.
At Platt Lane Fallowfield the game against Flixton Ladies started forty minutes late due to a mix-up regarding the official kick-off time.
The match finally got under way and possibly due to the fact that the Beechy players had waited over an hour since arriving at the ground and the Flixton team had little time to prepare the first half turned out to be a poor game of football.
It was no real surprise that both teams were delighted when the referee blew the whistle for the half time break.
It was a different story in the second half as both teams fought hard to win possession and Beechy’s defenders had to work hard when under pressure but stand-in keeper Shauna Smith dealt confidently with all Flixton’s attempts on target.
At the other end of the pitch the Flixton goalie was having a fantastic game keeping Beechy at bay but eventually United broke the deadlock and were rewarded with three goals in quick succession.
Sophie Wainwright was on target twice after forcing her way through the Flixton defence and producing equally strong finishes, the other goal coming from Alicia Stretton who scored via a lovely left footed shot that sent the ball low past the keeper and into the net.
The whole team deserved a pat on the back for achieving this 3-0 victory after turning a poor first half into a winning second forty-five minutes and the three points take Beechy to the top of the table with one game to play. Voted Player of the Match was Lauren O’Neill.
Beechy’s Squad: Shauna Smith, Lauren O’Neill, Gemma Winterburn, Samantha Smith, Rebecca Watkins, Crystal Barker, Ashleigh Spragg, Alicia Stretton, Rachel Griffin, Sophie Wainwright, Colby Gerrard, Beth Hewitt, Faye Cassidy.
