Outstanding young Salford volunteer awarded Rotary prize ‘will do anything for anyone’

A former Oakwood Acadamy pupil has been recognised by Salford City College and Worsley Rotary Club for his charitable work in the community.

Robert Wright, 19, volunteers six evenings a week at the You Can community club, and at The Beacon Centre in Salford, as well giving up every day of his summer holiday to help young people in Salford with disabilities.

Robert said he started volunteering because he wanted to “give something back”.

Robert’s tutor at Salford City College said: “This is Robert’s third year with the foundation department and we have seen him boost academically and socially. He enjoys coming to college and has 100% attendance.

“Robert is a polite and helpful young man. He is a people-pleaser; he will do anything for anybody.

“He is very reliable and he has continued this outside of college hours in his spare time volunteering for numerous positions with charity shops, local youth centres, and assisting with people with learning disabilities.

He was higlighted by his college and the Rotary Club for showing compassion and empathy above and beyond the call of duty and for making a difference in his local community.

Worsley Rotary Club – which earlier this year handed out community funds totalling £5,000 to local groups – works to promote the achievements of young people in Salford and to help those who are disadvantaged or disabled.

Worsley Rotary Club president Peter Irwin said: “We congratulate all the nominees for this award for the work that they do to help others but felt that the award should go to the person who dedicates virtually all of his spare time to help others.”

Robert wanted thank his nana Lynda for all her support, alongside Worsley Rotary, Salford City College and ‘You Can’ community club.
