You can already borrow books and dvds from your local Gateway – but now you can pick up free food waste bags too.
To mark National Recycle Week, September 12-18, Salford City Council will make the bio-degradable bags available over the counter at Eccles, Walkden, Swinton and Pendleton Gateways and Broughton Hub from Monday September 12.
It’s a trial to see if it encourages more people to recycle food waste which is collected every week.
Councillor David Lancaster, lead member for environment and community safety at Salford City Council, said: “We ask people to use the food waste bags because they will rot down.
“When people need more food bags we ask them to tie a single bag round the handle of their food caddy so our staff can leave them a roll. People can continue to do that but we thought it might make it easier if people could also pick them up when they’re at the Gateways, borrowing books, getting information or visiting local health services.
“It’s a trial to see how popular it is and if it works out for people we will carry it on.”
During National Recycle Week Salford residents are being urged to step up their recycling – particularly of aerosol cans and foil trays which can go into the brown bin and to avoid putting plastic carrier bags into the recycling bins.
