Suspected arsonist sets fire while children play at Chimney Pot Park

Thick black smoke emanated from a children’s park in Salford today after unknown offenders set fire to part of a play area.

One fire engine from Salford was dispatched to Chimney Pot Park on Langworthy Road, arriving on scene shortly after 3.15pm.

At the time young children were playing on the swings nearby, one eyewitness said.

Luckily the fire crew were on scene quickly and put out the fire before it could spread.

No one was injured and children, accompanied by parents, continued playing on the other side of the park as firefighters arrived.

Firefighters located the source as rubber safety matting around the play equipment, extinguishing the flames and damping down the smoke with a water jet.

The play area may now have to close for repairs.

Last month vandals caused over £1,300-worth of damage to a children’s play area in Kersal when ripped up rubber matting was thrown around Riverside Park in Salford.
