Salford’s Ordsall Hall saw the first ever World Jelly Wanging Championship on Sunday 12 July as part of its free family Garden Party.
A new twist on the popular welly-wanging event, it saw children seizing jelly of every colour, flavour and consistency in hand and flinging it as far as they could towards a giant target set up in the gardens of the Tudor Manor House.
Wanging weapons of choice included spoons, bowls, plates and even a catapult, while others decided to go free-hand.
Alongside excited children, competitive adults stepped up to the mark including Deputy Ceremonial Mayor of City of Salford, Cllr Karen Garrido, and Deputy Ceremonial Mayoress Beryl Henson.
Ordsall Hall Manager Liz McNabb said: “The jelly wanging was a real highlight of the party and we witnessed some ingenious throwing techniques.
“Prizes were awarded for the highest throw, best hit and the longest throw – a whopping 11.5 metres!
The day’s other activities included performances from MAPAS (Salford’s Music and Performing Arts Service), birds of prey displays, a climbing wall, creative arts and crafts activities, giant games and a bouncy castle.
The Garden Party was organised in association with Friends of Salford Museums Association. All proceeds from the day will go towards the protection and upkeep of the hall and surrounding gardens.
