Clifton Cricket Club on route to Burton Cup Final

It’s probably a bit unfair to say that Sunday’s cup triumph over Littleborough shows the gulf that’s between premier league and championship, as the 156 run margin of victory for Ian Morris’s  men over unbeaten Littleborough was possibly a bit flattering.

However the way that the side dismantled the championhip leaders, who have a full house of twelve 5 point championship wins under their belts, better even than Morris’s 58 out of 60 points, was utterly ruthless and brutal.

Boro were definitely up for it with Jim Ainscough going early, followed by Moz himself and James Evans, even Chris Lord was riding his luck alarmingly, but once the change bowlers wer brought into play, Lord (63) and Liam Dorsey (68) put together a partnership of 96 to ease the nerves.

Still the visitors weren’t done though as they produced another burst which saw the score dissolve to 188-7 with two new batsmen at the crease.

However, Rash and Danny Hill played a couple of overs back before unleashing a whirlwind of boundaries that saw them score 51 in under 5 overs, Rash then completed a well deserved 50 off the last ball and the innings closed on an imposing 264-8

‘Boro looked shellshocked and the openers immediately started playing shots that you wouldn’t normally expect them to try until ten or fifteen overs were on the board. The pressure of the huge total proved too great and wickets tumbled at regular intervals.

All five bowlers tasted success with Andy Lord picking up 4-9 at the death. Saturday’s six wicket hero Liam Dorsey didn’t even get to bowl and neither did Rob Reade who performed so well in the earlier rounds. The innings finally closed on Littleborough’s last visit to Clifton with the scoreboard showing 108.
