Highways England are creating so much noise by working overnight on the M60 at Worsley that it has forced some people to leave their homes, says a local MP.
Video shot in the middle of the night by frazzled residents on Manthorpe Avenue in Roe Green shows the extent of the roadworks going on from 11pm to 3am every night.
MP Barbara Keeley has been forced to step in to field complaints about the overnight work but says even she has been unable to get hold of Highways England Project Managers, who are supposed to be overseeing the project.
The complaints are over angle grinding, crane work and drilling just 20 metres from homes alongside the M60, which is causing sleepless nights.
The agency’s £202 million M60 smart motorway project is due to be completed in autumn 2017.
Metal gantries up to 100 tonnes are being craned into place while work is ongoing on a 17-mile stretch of the M60 and M62 from Sale to Rochdale.
But residents say screening and fencing have also been removed so there is nothing to block out the noisy work or the sound of motorway traffic.
“The nuisance caused has reached a new level this week with this night work near Roe Green,” said the Worsley and Eccles South MP.
“Some residents say they did not get any notice of the work being done this week, although they should have done.
“I have been complaining to Highways England for months about the messy and inconsiderate way they are working on stretches of the M60 which are very close to people’s homes.
“I understand that some residents have had to move out of their homes as they cannot stand the noise of the night work. Others are having sleepless nights.
“This work on the M60 has got many months to go and I am calling on Highways England to start being more considerate of residents in Worsley and Eccles South.
“People need to sleep and Highways England must take measures to reduce this noise so that people can get that sleep.”
A spokesman for Highways England said: “We have worked hard to keep residents informed of this particular work and as well as writing to residents, we went door-to-door to speak to people individually and address any concerns well before any of the work got underway.
“As a result of feedback from residents we amended the way we had originally intended to carry out the work to further reduce any disruption and inconvenience.
“We have now moved further down the motorway away from these residents but we will continue to talk to and work with all residents and other M60 neighbours as we deliver this important investment in the local motorway network and the regional economy.
“Anyone with concerns can contact us on our 24-7 customer telephone number at 0161 787 3300 and they can email us at info@msm.co.uk (this is only monitored during office hours).”
