Gary Barlow ‘Girls’ musical to debut at The Lowry

A new musical penned by Take That star Gary Barlow will have its world premiere at The Lowry in Salford in 2016.

A proportion of the profits will be donated to Leukaemia Research, said Barlow, announcing the news this week.

‘Girls’ is inspired by the true story of a group of ladies, who decide to appear nude for a Women’s Institute calendar in order to raise funds to buy a settee for their local hospital.

This musical comedy shows life in their Yorkshire village, how it happened, the effect on husbands, sons and daughters, and how a group of ordinary ladies achieved something extraordinary.

Co-written by Olivier Award-winner Tim Firth, the pair made the announcement in a church hall in Yorkshire where the Calendar Girls story began.

Gary and Tim said: “We are over the moon with the reception our new musical The Girls has had and to have received the ecstatic blessing of the original Calendar Girls is something that is so, so special to us. We look forward to the world premiere.

With Take That, tax avoider Gary has written and co-written 14 number one singles, has sold over 50 million records worldwide and is a six times Ivor Novello Award winner. Tim has won the the British Comedy Awards Best Comedy Film for Calendar Girls.

Girls plays at The Lowry, Salford Quays, from 13-30 January 2016.
