White Pride marchers due to clash with anti-fascists in Manchester

A group of neo-Nazis will hold a demonstration in Manchester city centre tomorrow, with counter protests expected from anti-fascist groups.

White Pride marchers are due to gather at Piccadilly from midday on Saturday 22 August.

The Manchester branch of Unite Against Fascism, which opposes the likes of the British National Party and the English Defence League, are to gather in Piccadilly Gardens to form a counter-protest.

Council leaders said they would “much rather this event was not happening here at all”, and urged the public to ignore the protest.

In March police made a number of arrests after around 100 neo-Nazi campaigners gathered in Manchester to celebrate ‘White Pride Day’.

The protesters marched from a nearby pub to Piccadilly Gardens, parading National Front and White Pride flags.

Greater Manchester Police said it was aware of the protest and planned counter-protest but said it would focus on allowing a peaceful protest.

Chief Superintendent John O’Hare said: “We understand that protests such as these can be incredibly emotional involving two opposing sides with polarised views.

“They can present difficult challenges for all involved and we will do everything in our power to facilitate a peaceful protest, whilst remaining completely impartial.

“We respect everyone’s right to lawfully protest and officers will be working with Manchester City Council to ensure it passes peacefully and safely.

“Everyone has the right to free speech, but with this comes a high degree of personal responsibility and we will take positive action against anybody who abuses such an important privilege.”

Further travel disruption is expected as Manchester United play Newcastle at Old Trafford on the same day with a 12.45 kick off.
