Greater Manchester Police have spent the morning at the scene of an explosion on Formby Road.
Officers were called to a house on Formby Road just before 1am. They say damage is consistent with an explosive device but no one was injured.
A loud bang was heard by residents of the Duchy Estate.
Detectives and forensic experts have been at the scene trying to establish the exact nature of the device.
Some residents claim to have heard the explosion as far away as Higher Broughton.
