Beechy lose out to Leigh Athletic

Beechfield United suffered their first defeat of the season in the FBT Manchester Football League when they lost 2-0 to Leigh Athletic.

Conditions at Salford Sports Village were ideal for football but United made the worst possible start by conceding a poor goal in less than four minutes.

The visitors fashioned a move through midfield and some slack defending by Beechy allowed the Leigh Athletic No 9 a clear run into the area and he fired the ball ow into the corner of the net.

United reacted in a positive manner as they searched for a quick-fire equaliser but in the opening ten
minutes they never really tested the visitors keeper. United keeper Jordan Broxson showed his ability with an excellent reaction save prior to a great solo run by Jamie Sinnott who’s thunderous drive struck the crossbar and Dave Leach had two golden chances to get Beechy back level during a better
period of play from United.

But the visitors were a well organised outfit in all areas of the pitch and United’s midfield quartet of Chris Ferris, Rob Lockley, Jamie Sinnott and Craig Massey had to work hard to win a decent share of the ball.

After making a slow start to the second half Beechy found a good attacking rhythm and Craig Massey was unlucky not to score following a stylish four man move. Gifted numerous free kicks Leigh Athletic always
threatened to increase their lead but Beechy remained defiant and produced some resolute defending.

United continued to create a better brand of football in the second period and came close on numerous occasions to getting back level in the last twenty minutes. Substitute Brad Sixsmith deserved a goal after he skillfully beat three opponents but with the keeper beaten the ball skimmed the top of the crossbar. Craig Massey had a decent opportunity to net an equaliser and fully committed to all-out attack Beechy obviously left gaps in defence and Leigh Athletic took full advantage.

In the second minute of time added on they created a move down the left flank and one of their second half substitutes via a precise close range finish guaranteed the visitors the three points.

United’s Man of the Match Was Luke Johnston.
