Man suffers severe burns in ‘suspicious’ garage blaze


A man is seriously injured in hospital after he was trapped inside a burning garage in Manchester.

A passerby was walking along Park Street, off Bury Old Road in Prestwich last night, Wednesday 9 September, when he heard a loud bang coming from inside a garage.

He rushed over to try and rescue the man inside but was beaten back by flames and thick smoke.

Two fire crews from Broughton and Agecroft arrived at 9.50pm to find the garage burning fiercly.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus broke their way in before pulling the victim to safety.

He had suffered severe burns to his body and lower back and was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital for treatment, where his condition is described as being serious.

It took three hours to bring the fire under control.

Greater Manchester Fire confirmed the blaze was being treated as suspicious.

The passerby who attempted to rescue the man also suffered burns to his hands and smoke inhalation, he too was treated at the scene but did not require hospital treatment.

Greater Manchester Police have now taken over the case and a crime investigation will follow.
