Drivers in Greater Manchester are being encouraged to switch to public transport and get more out of their journey.
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has launched the Go Public campaign, reminding potential passengers that travel time can be enjoyable on public transport.
The campaign is being rolled out across the Metrolink network first but will be extended to all types of public transport from mid-October onwards.
On Metrolink, passengers now benefit from free Wi-Fi on board, meaning they can catch up with emails, social media, entertainment and the latest news and travel information while travelling by tram. Drivers can also save money on parking and fuel costs and help the environment.
For people travelling from further afield, there are hundreds of car parking spaces at Metrolink Park & Ride car parks. Drivers can choose from a number of free-of-charge car parks when travelling on Metrolink, so there’s never been a better time to switch to the tram.
TfGM’s Metrolink Director, Peter Cushing, said: “The Go Public campaign is a great reminder of the benefits of using public transport, including giving people back time to make more out of their journey. This makes using the tram a more attractive option.
“We welcome car drivers in particular to try out the trams, especially if they live near to a stop – I’m sure the experience will convince them to make the switch.”
Metrolink, now the largest light rail network in the UK, covers almost 60 miles, with a fleet of 100 trams running to 92 stops across Greater Manchester.
The Go Public campaign is funded by the Local Sustainable Transport Fund, which also funds the Travel Choices programme. Travel Choices looks to encourage people who live and work in Greater Manchester to consider sustainable and active travel options including public transport, car-sharing, walking and cycling.
This includes working with over 500 businesses across Greater Manchester to promote sustainable and active commuting as well as engaging with thousands of residents through Personal Travel Planning.
