The Met Office has extended its yellow weather warning from yesterday evening until 7pm tonight, Tuesday 31 March.
The winds are expected to die away throughout the day but forecasters predict gusts of 50-60mph throughout the day, especially around squally showers and brief hailstorms.
The deep area of low pressure will move away east through today but will maintain a swathe of very strong northwesterly winds across a large part of Britain, before easing this evening.
On Monday evening the North West Motorway Police recorded a maximum wind speed of 55mph over Barton High-Level Bridge at J10-11 of the M60.
In high winds the bridge is often closed to traffic.
Small amounts of localised damage occurred overnight with northwesterly gales continuing during Tuesday.
Met Office forecasters say the public should be aware of the risk of localised damage, for example to trees, and for minor disruption to travel.
