City West and friends walk for Dementia Carers’ Day

A social landlord has raised £750 for National Dementia Carers’ Day, after organising a ‘memory walk’ across Salford.

Staff working at City West Housing Trust’s sheltered schemes embarked on their journey on Friday 11th September – raising awareness of dementia across City West neighbourhoods, whilst fundraising to support carers of people living with the condition.

The eight and a half mile walk saw staff from City West’s Independent Living Service visit five sheltered schemes to collect donations whilst taking part in a variety of challenges set by customers at each scheme – including sing-alongs, an activity often used to help unlock memories of dementia patients.

All cash raised will be presented to the Alzheimer’s Society – one of the founders of National Dementia Carers’ Day, held on Sunday 13th September 2015.

After the trek, the walkers – who travelled from The Meadows scheme in Cadishead to Enfield in Eccles – joined City West customers for a buffet dinner and entertainment.

Margaret Madden, Head of Independent Living Services at City West, said: “Our ageing population, coupled with increasing pressure on NHS resources and rising social care costs, means that caring for relatives is something more families are likely to face.

“Dementia Carers’ Day celebrates the crucial role of carers who support loved ones living with dementia, and we are proud to have raised money for the Alzheimer’s Society – pledging our support to people who have a dementia diagnosis, a condition that affects many of the residents living in our care schemes across Salford.”
