12.5 tons of rubbish collected in clean ups as council call for Langworthy litter-pickers

Over 12 tonnes of rubbish was picked up in community clean ups in Salford and Eccles, say Salford council.

The massive haul came after volunteers tackled two small areas around Barff Road and Kennedy Road in Weaste, and from Liverpool Road to Gladstone Road in Eccles.

Filthy streets, flytipping and rubbish-strewn roads are a source of major complaint for residents in litter hotspots in Weaste, Seedley and across the city.

With cuts to Salford’s Environmental Services budget and bin collections moving to once a fortnight, there’s a provision of litter on local roads like we’ve never seen before.

The council’s plan is now to launch a four week campaign to help the community tackle issues that bother them and clean up part of Langworthy.

Councillor Gena Merrett, assistant mayor for housing and environment, said: “This is an intensive programme in a small area to show what can be done if everyone works together.”It’s about working with the community to tackle the things residents want to improve, such as litter, rubbish dumped beside bins, untidy back alleys and even loneliness and not feeling part of their community.

“We will make sure people have the right bins and knowledge to recycle properly. Every tonne of waste we can recycle rather than burying in landfill saves the council money which can be spent on services and it’s better for the environment.

“One of our main pushes will be to remind people that waste must not be left beside bins but must be properly disposed of in the right bin. Cutting ‘side waste’ out will make a huge difference to the cleanliness and appearance of our streets.”

The focus of this campaign, which starts on Monday September 21, will be a small area bounded by Lower Seedley Road, Seedley Road and Langworthy Road.

Children from Holy Family RC primary school are due to kick start the clean up by tidying the school playground.

Cllr Merrett added: “As the campaign progresses, we will target those people who drag down their community and city by flytipping.

“We have a very successful track record of catching and prosecuting these people and will not stop until we get the message across – flytipping is not welcome in Salford.”
