Family and friends of a desperately ill teenager from Salford have scored a major win – by raising over £2,500 with a sponsored head shave.
Emily James was diagnosed with the rare genetic illness Ehlers Danlos Syndrome at the age of 11, and for the past six years has suffered terribly with the myriad of medical problems it causes.
After scores of operations, even the hardworking doctors and nurses on the NHS can do little more for her.
To even the balance, Emily’s cousin Genna Leach, 29, a pre-school leader in Weaste, went under the clippers on Saturday 23 May at the Coach and Horses pub on Eccles New Road.
Over 100 children and parents packed out the pub for the once-in-a-lifetime event in Salford.
“There was a lot more people there than I expected, I was in a bit of a daze, to be honest,” said Genna.
“I was nervous beforehand but it wasn’t as bad as I thought.
“Emily was there holding my hand throughout so it got quite emotional.”
Genna’s children 10-year-old Lleyton, 7-year-old Ashley, 9-year-old Olivia and 4-year-old Bradley all turned out in coloured ‘My Mama’s so bald…’ T-shirts to cheer on their brave mum.
“I think Olivia was traumatised by it!” Genna laughs.
“She’s never seen me like that before.
“The boys weren’t keen beforehand but when I had it done they were proud of me, so if I’ve got their approval that’s what matters!”
With donations flying in to Emily’s Go Fund Me page and much more raised on the day, the total so far to help care for the teenager has reached a whopping £2725.
Genna added: “Everyone’s been amazing in showing their support – I would never have done this for any other reason and I’d like to thank everyone who donated.”
