Police are investigating after a man apparently tried to throw a ‘paint bomb’ into a crowded wedding party at St Paul’s Church in Salford.
It’s understood the object could be a can of spray paint, thrown down to the ground from a nearby block of flats.
Rumours that there was an explosion at the church do not appear to be correct.
Greater Manchester Police were called to St Paul’s, at Paddington Close on Salford precinct, at around 1.30pm on Friday 18 September.
They cordoned off the immediate area around Churchill Way.
As of 4pm police forensics teams were still at the scene.
Eyewitnesses reported that the object hit the wall of the church instead of its intended target and exploded paint over the thrower.
Ambulances were not called to the church and no-one was injured, say police.
No arrests have yet been made.
Police have not linked the incident with any recent violence in Salford.
The church was the location for Paul Massey’s funeral, on Friday 28 August.
In a statement Greater Manchester Police said: “On Friday 18 September 2015 police received a report that an object was thrown at St Paul’s Church, Pendleton.
“Police are in the early stages of an investigation but it is believed the object contained paint or dye. No-one was injured in the incident.”
No-one at the church was available for comment.
