£9m ‘affordable rent’ Salford tower block scheme wins approval

Housing association Guinness Partership has won approval from Salford City Council to turn a 15-storey tower block into 119 flats for affordable rent.

Matthias Court, on Silk Street, has lain vacant for over two years. It was last used as student accommodation by Salford University.

Guinness, which is headquartered in Oldham, received funding from the Homes and Communities Agency to spend £9 million on major internal and external works on the block.

61 one-bed and 58 two-bedroom apartments will be on offer, with two flats on the ground floor specially adapted for those with disabilities.

One minor change is that the rear entrance lobby will now extend to three floors, rather than the original one.

A double-height entrance at the front is still in the plans.

Allan Ramsay, Guiness Partnership’s Director of Investment & Commercial said: “We are thrilled to be involved in this project which will create brand new high quality homes for affordable rent in a great location.

“We’re particularly pleased with the support we’ve received from both Salford City Council and the Homes and Communities Agency, who’ve been very helpful in getting us to the point where works can start.”

The refurbishment works will be carried out by The Guinness Partnership’s repairs and maintenance contractor City Response Limited and are expected to be complete in summer 2016.
