Children and teachers from schools across Salford are wearing wonderful homemade costumes today in honour of Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity.
The Dahlicious Dress Up Day takes place every year to support the charity, which raises money to help seriously ill children.
Roald Dahl, the writer of unforgettable children’s classics such as Matilda, George’s Marvellous Medicine, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach, sadly died in 1990 and his widow Felicity set up the Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity.
Schools taking part in the Dahlicious Dress Up Day include Moorside Community Primary School in Swinton, River View Primary School in Salford and Fiddler’s Lane Primary School in Irlam.
Mrs Robinson, lead teacher for reading at Moorside Community Primary School, told SalfordOnline.com: “We’re having Key Stage one and Key Stage two assemblies today to celebrate the children’s costumes and their achievements throughout the week, then all activities are suspended for a fantastic day of Roald Dahl reading and games.
“It’s just wonderful to see all the children and teachers dressed up in character.
“Last year we raised £350 for the charity and we’re hoping to top that again this year.”
All the money raised goes to help the national charity, which supports nurses, carers and families of severely ill children.
Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity created the first ever Paediatric Epilepsy Nurse Specialist post in the UK in 1991, based at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.
Since then the charity have created 48 Roald Dahl healthcare professional posts around the country.
Since 1997 the Charity have awarded grants to the families of over 4,000 seriously ill children who are living in severe financial hardship, as well as handing out over £2.5million to fund 400 grassroots projects and charities.
