The BBC are to celebrate Bolton funnyman Peter Kay’s career with a documentary looking back at his 20 years in the business.
His stand-up career began while on a HND Media Performance course at Salford University, which he leveraged into a Perrier-nominated show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1998.
Characters from his first TV series, That Peter Kay Thing, were inspired by his first jobs working in a bingo hall, a cash and carry supermarket and even a toilet roll factory.
The hour-long documentary, Twenty Years of Funny, will look at everything from Kay’s early TV work to his record-busting tours, and chart-topping charity singles.
Kay, 42, made headlines on SalfordOnline.com earlier this year after picking locations across the city to shoot BBC2 drama Cradle to Grave.
He said: “What a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the last 20 years and highlight some of the work it’s been my honour to create.”
Shane Allen, controller of BBC comedy, added: “This has been a remarkable year for Peter and it feels timely to mark his exceptional talents as sitcom writer and performer as well as record-breaking stand-up comedian.
“It’s a great opportunity to honour someone at the top of their game and enjoy the work that got him there.”
