Little Hulton shooting: 21-year-old bailed after attempted murder arrest

Police have released a man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a 34-year-old man was shot in Little Hulton.

Armed police were scrambled to the scene at Coniston Avenue on Monday 5 October at 11.20pm after victim Darren Williams was blasted three times in the chest and torso by a would-be hitman on a motorbike.

He was treated for gunshot wounds at the scene and remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

At around 11.45pm the same night a motorbike was discovered on fire in an alleyway in Weaste, Salford, some two miles away from the Little Hulton shooting.

Police called the hit a ‘targeted’ attack, but it is still not known whether Mr Williams was the intended target or whether it was a case of mistaken identity.

Detectives said they were looking for two men on a motorbike who shot at least three bullets at Mr Williams as they rode along the residential street.

The gunmen are believed to have driven up and down Coniston Avenue for around half an hour looking for their target.

Mr Williams was shot outside his home, while his girlfriend and family slept inside.

Armed police and tactical aid units were called to Little Hulton area in the early hours of Thursday 8 October, where the 21-year-old suspect was arrested.

He was questioned on suspicion of attempted murder but has now been released on police bail until 19 November.

Detective Chief Inspector Clare Devlin of Salford division said police were not linking the shooting to any other recent firearms violence in Salford and believed it to be an isolated incident.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to call 0161 856 8361, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
