Review: Cirque Surreal – The Voyagers – The Lowry, Salford

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

There were thrills and spills galore for all the family in this entertaining and awe-inspiring show.

Cirque Surreal is Britain’s biggest contemporary circus and an absolute delight to watch.

This was a celebration of a myraid of nationalities and cultures – which has always been the core strength of the performing arts.

26 leading artistes from 10 different countries came together for the first time to perform on stage.

They combined their skill and unique talents to give a show-stopping performance.

Circus, dance, drama and comedy highlights the outstanding talent of 10 very different acts.

Voyagers is a 90-minute thrill ride featuring breathtaking aerial acts, astounding acrobatics, gravity-defying balancing acts, juggling and hilarious comedy.

The costumes were highly bizarre and very colourful and the music gave intense excitement just at the right moment. This show caters for all ages.

It begins with an odd looking man walking through the audience with a suitcase, throughout the show he pops up in many acts and is looking for acceptance into the global community.

The man takes part in two solo acts later in the performance which make you squirm but amazed at the same time.

The first involved putting his body through a tiny coat hanger, yes you guessed it he is a contortionist and had the audience in fits of laughter.

Talking of laughter another act including a clown and audience participation (although I think they were part of the show) had us in stitches where five audience members were showing their agility skills doing cartwheels then showing off their boxing skills.

I don’t think there was a single person watching that didn’t find this truly hilarious.

For us we had two favourite acts which involved great skill and strength. The first involved three performers sliding and climbing up 30ft poles and dropping down head first so quick and just stopping before they reached the bottom, it was absolutely breathtaking to watch.

The second was the final act which I could watch over and over again and it would guarantee to thrill each time.

This was a hand-to-hand balancing act performed by two men. The duo merges precise choreography with the intensity and dynamics of acrobatics.

With no room for error or mistakes, this focused, balanced and surefooted duo will amaze any audience with their breathtaking agility and could grace on any stage in the world.

This was absolutely incredible world-class entertainment at The Lowry and a great way to kick off the Easter Holidays.

Circque Surreal – The Voyagers is on at the Lowry until Monday 6 April. Find out more or book tickets here.
