Salford cycle paths and looplines set for cash injection

Walkers and cyclists have been given a New Year boost as the council announces new funding to improve off-road routes.

Five miles of traffic-free paths are set to be revamped on four routes between Monton, Walkden, Worsley, Little Hulton and Ellenbrook.

Roe Green and Linnyshaw ‘looplines’ follow old railway lines, while the Tyldesley Loopline will also run alongside the guided busway to Leigh.

The three-metre wide routes have been designed for cyclists, pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility scooter users.

The second phase of Port Salford Greenway will connect Winton, Peel Green and Brookhouse to the thousands of new jobs expected at Port Salford.

Councillor Derek Antrobus, Executive Lead Member for Strategic Planning, at Salford City Council said: “These new routes will help people reach jobs but they are also a nice way for people to enjoy the countryside away from the hustle and bustle of a growing city.”

Work on the final two sections of Roe Green Loopline is already underway and will be complete by June 2016.

And from January 2016, trees will be removed and trimmed to clear enough space on the Port Salford Greenway and Tyldesley and Linnyshaw looplines.

A total of £4.5m secured from the government will be spent between 2015-2018 in Salford, says the council.

These funding sources include the Growth Deal, the Block 3 Highways Capital Programme and the second phase of Cycle City Ambition Grant.

Port Salford Greenway phase 2, 0.7 miles

The Greenway is being constructed in phases and will eventually connect Winton, Peel Green and Brookhouse to Port Salford as well as to existing employment opportunities in and around the Trafford Centre.

Linnyshaw Loopline 1.5 miles

The loopline starts at Blackleach Country Park, and the alternative route around Walkden on the old railway lines, which are now cycle paths, are a good place to spot wildlife.

Roe Green Loopline 1.2 miles

This route is 7.2km long and follows the old railway line from Monton to Worsley. The final two phases are underway and will be completed in 2016.

Tyldsley Loopline 2.2km

The Tyldsley Loopline links the Roe Green Loopline to the new 4.5 metre wide cycleway that has been built alongside the guided busway at Newearth Road.
