Salford move helps pull Hydes Brewery to 25pc profit boost

Hydes Brewery has announced a spike in turnover and profits directly linked to its move to Salford Quays.

Financial reports show 2014/15 continued to be a positive year for the beer-makers.

Turnover grew by 20% to £22.3m and operating profit by 27% to £2.2m.

Cost savings from the firm’s December 2012 move from Moss Side to Kansas Avenue on Salford Quays helped deliver a 25% increase in operating profit last year.

Speaking to SalfordOnline.com managing director Chris Hopkins said: “The move to this site in Salford has been a downsizing of the brewing operation but it has allowed us to become more fleet of foot in terms of reacting rapidly to the market.

“Now we see a much larger variety of beers coming forward.”

With smaller production runs Hydes has been able to produce a wider variety of products at lower cost.

“When we were still in Manchester we had to brew a minimum of 140 thirty-six gallon barrels a time,” said Chris.

“Now we can do as little as 20 barrels.

“We’ve been able to tap into that current trend of offering much more variety.

“So last year we produced 53 beers, all of which are bespoke and with their own discrete ingredients and flavours.”

The new brewery is producing a wide range of cask beers including old Hydes favourites such as Original and Manchester’s Finest and a series of celebration beers linked to seasons or events, such as the Rugby World Cup.

In addition a Provenance range is available featuring hops from around the world in beers such as ‘Munchen’ and ‘Paddock Wood’.

Hydes also said a restructuring to refocus on the managed house side of the business had boosted turnover.

It added that a restructure to “dispose of unsustainable sites” while acquiring pubs in areas with high disposable income had proved profitable.

Chris continued: “This was a second positive year for the business following the major changes that were implemented in 2012.

“Those changes were designed to focus the management team on the development of the pub business so it is pleasing to see that focus paying off. We look forward to further progress in the implementation of our strategy during 2015/16.”
